Yeshe, A Tibetan Elder

"Yeshe", meaning "Wisdom", is a name often given to initiates in Tibetan Buddhism. This traditional elder of Tibet stands strong in her beliefs, counting the 108 prayer beads of her rosary which mark her silent chanting. She is in touch with a great inner peace and it calms me just to be with her.

Yeshe is my first Grandmother of this year, with head, hands and feet of Super Sculpey, and body of cloth over poseable wire armature. Eyes are black beads. Her hair is mixed mohair and wool, braided with a red silk ribbon. She wears a traditional robe and apron, leather boots and a silver and amber-colored glass beaded necklace, with silver earrings in a tri-pattern which I use to represent the three essential principals of Buddhism: the Buddha, the dharma and the sangha.
