![]() Shanti: Peace |
We know the world today is not in perfect balance, but since September 11th, this lack of balance makes life seem much more precarious, and more precious too. I imagined the persona of Peace holding a fragile, beautiful world in one hand, and in the other, the dove of peace. The world may be heavy with woe, and the dove light and posed to fly, but Peace has a firm grip on that globe, and hope in her heart for the balancing act she is called upon to do. May she bless us all. Attending yoga classes for me was the best medicine to counter-act the chaos let loose upon the world in September, plus soon after, starting this sculpture. I call this figure by a Sanscrit name despite her obviously classic Greek appearance, "Shanti". As my yoga teacher says at the close of each class, "Peace" and the dove both are fully sculpted in natural stone clay, and painted. She is wigged with mohair, and crowned with a metal gold leaf garland. Her Greek chiton is draped in hand-dyed silk chiffon, edge-stitched with gold thread, belted with a gold ribbon. Our Planet Earth is represented by a blue glass marble, mapped accurately with green continents (puchased at a recent Mashantucket-Pequot pow-wow). Circular 8 inch base, inscribed with "peace" in many languages. Click Here for a Close-up Portrait
