"Spirit of the Land, Walking"

The Spirit of the Land, Walking

In Arthurian legends the well-being of the countryside closely paralleled the well-being of the throne. As Arthur prospered and suffered, so did the land. It was said that the spirit of the land was sometimes seen wandering about as a bent old woman, looking rather like a tree, with skin like bark and hair of lichens.

Gnarled and weathered, this Spirit travels so slowly the dangling roots of her rough woven dress almost find root in the earth beneath her feet. Her long hair is of Cotswold wool, tangled with branches and oak leaves; her staff, lichens and moss were collected near Olympia, Washington. Head, hands and feet are in a mixture of coppery Sculpey III's, painted with acrylics. Her circular stand is of wood. I believe Arthur must be fading and the land is in a late Autumn stage. What must we do to bring the earth once more into fresh full bud?
