"After the Drought"

After the Drought

I call her Colleen, an ever-young Irish hard-working woman, celebrating life despite all its shortcomings, her infirmities and missing teeth. After a long summer of drought (and we had one this past summer!), the long-awaited rains have finally come, bringing the first sprout of new green life back to the parched land.

"Faith through hard times" is a personal collage tarot card that came to me during a card-making session I led at a camp. Its close-up texture of the parched earth provided the inspiration for her base, which was sculpted in paperclay. I had this little laughing head in my studio for many months before her whole character emerged. (No, she didn't laugh her head off, I had to explain, she just didn't have her body quite yet) .

While on exhibit for a local arts faculty gallery show, the New Haven Advocate's review singled her out for a description, lauding

"the nuances of (her) expression and a delightful feel for the texture of aged skin."

You go old girl! Soon thereafter she was sold, and was picked up during an intense rainstorm.
