"Prelude to Crowning"

Prelude to Crowning

A rainbow of light and energy sings a joyous welcome to new life! The Mother's body is the sacred temple not only for her own Kundalini energy moving from the base of her spine up to the crown of her head, expanding and harmonizing consciousness into divine oneness. She is one with the future child unfolding within her as well.

This is a portrait of my Chakra Yoga teacher during the last week of her first pregnancy. Her baby's head had recently moved into birthing position. I realized that she had crown chakras at both ends, as the baby's crown was now located in her mother's first, or root chakra. Within the mother was another rainbow in reverse!

Each chakra has its own color, symbolic shape, and ancient Sanskrit sound syllables which vibrate and awaken the energy center, controling the inticracies of the body, its organs, emotions, and our relationships with the world around us. Various yoga positions and hand positions (mudras) stimulate different chakras as well, and my teacher has spent many years exploring and sharing in this area. I thank and honor her for that and also for sharing this most sacred time with me through her posing, and letting me see the archetypal Mother in a new light. Parenting will now continue to provide a new sort of spirtual enlightenment.

Appropriately-colored crystals mark each chakra point, set into the natural stone clay (La Doll) along both front and back spines. The full-body sculpture sits 8" high, painted with acrylics, including interference pigments. Hair is black mohair, earrings are crystal, and seven (AB) crystals create the crown that celebrates her own crown chakra. Purple handmade rice paper covers the simple Japanese style wooden base sized 10"x12". Her white velvet cushion has crystals on its corner tassles.
